Speaking at NACVA’s annual conference in London this week, Mandy Johnson, chief of the Small Charities Coalition criticised certain recommendations from the House of Lords Select Committee regarding the use of digital technology by charities.

She commented: “What they are advising small charities to do is to get a website and get on social media, but that’s what we should have been advising small charities to do 10 years ago. The world has moved on…”

Small and medium-sized charities and community groups are the backbone of the UK’s regions; reaching, engaging and helping those who need it in their local areas. In fact, Locality’s report Diseconomies, argued that local charities often see substantially better outcomes, because they know their community and have a flexible approach, which is vastly more effective than national, standardised, one-size-fits-all services.

Digital tools bring efficiency gains, more transparency and greater collaboration. Many have been quick to recognise the impact of social media and online fundraising but we’re yet to see true digital transformation in the way that these organisations apply for grants and other funds.

Sign up now for the Roc Newbury 10K 2018 supported by The Good Exchange.

Newbury-based IT services provider Roc Technologies and The Good Exchange take over sponsorship from Bayer.

The new sponsors, along with race organiser Newbury Athletic Club (AC), will be encouraging as many runners as possible to sign up and take part in the 2018 race, which will take place on Sunday, May 27.

With the opening of entries also comes the announcement that PALS West Berkshire (Partners for Active Leisure Scheme) have been chosen as the nominated charity for the race.

JustGiving has announced that it has had to shut down nearly 100 pages over the last 18 months because it believed them to be fraudulent.  Over the last decade the shift in the way that the public interacts with giving campaigns, and the methods of donation have also meant that it is easier for fraudsters to create ‘fake’ pages.

The sheer amount of suspect activity across various fundraising platforms has created a call for tighter scrutiny from the online fundraising sector, including checks before fundraising pages go live and monitoring and evaluation upon completion to ensure money is collected and appropriately spent.

By Graham Martin – Criminals are using fundraising site JustGiving to launder cash and con the public, it has emerged.

It has had to close down almost 100 of its appeal pages over the past 18 months after they were found to be fraudulent.  The upsurge in criminal activity may be linked to the public’s willingness to donate following tragedies, such as the Grenfell Tower disaster.
